Mr. Haïder made the remarks in front of the Prime minister Mahammed Dionne, who chaired the graduation ceremony of the Institut africain de management (IAM).

Former minister of the environment, Aly Haïder was the first to ring in the month of may, the alert on excessive cutting of wood and its trafficking to the Gambia.

The director of the Oceanium had, in the course of a press conference, said that Senegal has “lost over a million trees since 2010 and the Gambia has managed to make a nearly 140 billion CFA francs.”

He welcomed the frequent presence of the minister of the armed Forces, of the Interior and of the Environment in the regions of Ziguinchor, Kolda and Sedhiou.

During a trip in June in the Casamance, the minister of the armed Forces, Augustin Tine, had stated that the senegalese government will take “strong measures” against illegal timber harvesting in the Casamance region.

“The decision is made to stop excessive cutting of wood in our forests. It is necessary that people who engage in this practice the include. I strongly believe that this practice will cease in a few days,” he said.

Thursday, the passage of the government in the national Assembly, the minister of the Environment and sustainable Development, Abdoulaye Baldé had argued that the government has taken “to arm the body with the fight against the illicit traffic of wood and continues the response with sweeps along the borders”.

“More than 30 offenders languishing in prisons. This is to tell you that the government takes to arm the body with the fight against the illegal traffic of wood. We are in the process of continuing the response,” he said.

“We want to internationalize the struggle in the fight against the illegal exploitation of wood,” he noted, stressing that the security forces and defence have conducted a “grid search” along the borders with some neighbouring countries of Senegal.

“Indeed, the trafficking of illegal wood is a problem and currently, the government provides a response. The forces of defense and of security are conducting an intensive drive against the illegal traffic of wood,” added Mr. Baldé.
