While the Samsung Galaxy S5 already passed in Lollipop , the Galaxy Note 4, newer model, is still running Android Kit Kat (4.4.4) even if it has already adopted the “flat desing.” In the end its predecessor, the Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N9005) that pass under Lollipop first . It may not be the case for all models but I’ve seen on other sites, the first screens of this high-end Android 5.0. This is also the case for the model of my wife, a “bare” copy (without operator) purchased on a site of e-commerce, which is now eligible for the upgrade.
The update seems to be offered in both OTA (Over The Air) as the official app via Samsung Kies . The download weighs just over 1GB (1.2GB) from the application and a little over 800MB OTA. Since Kies, it is clear that it is the Android version 5.0 (Lollipop), and that there must be between 10 and 30 minutes to complete the upgrade . It is also stated that some applications installed on the terminal will require perhaps be updated following the passage under Lollipop. This applies in the application Gear Manager which, I recall, is used for connection to the connected watches, the Galaxy Gear 2 Lite tested here. The last important point emphasized by Kies is that it will not be possible after this update, ironing Android Kit Kat .
As with any update of an OS, it is strongly recommended to make a backup before embarking on this operation . I remember that this can be supported Samsung Kies (Backup / Recovery tab). After downloading the file, the device restarts and displays a “ODIN MODE” screen to remind that you should not turn off his camera during this phase. When it restarts again is that the operation is complete
Here are some screens of the Galaxy Note 3 sub Kit Kat (4.4.2) and now under Lollipop (5.0)
For comparison, here are the same screens on a Galaxy Note 4 sub Kit Kat (4.4.4).
It’s still a little early to give you my feedback on the positive and those who are a little less but I would you a more complete topo soon as I have some time. Waiting to see the impact on performance and battery life, here are a few of the observed changes before making the device to my wife, I thank the same time:
- New page lock (visual effects, access the photo function)
- Ability to display notifications from the locked page . On this occasion, I noticed a display that mix text in French and English.
- Interface Design Evolution (menus and applications). Finally, it was time! This interface is changing and this gives him a second youth. Warning, this terminal is not that old. He was officially presented to the IFA in September 2013.
- New notifications bar . It is similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Note and Galaxy S5 4 although I have not yet seen the changes GS5 since its upgrade.
- New multitasking window.
- If you have protected your Galaxy Note S 3 with a View Case Cover, visible through the closed window component was also redesigned.
