The Rolls-Royce of smartphones

Invoiced 749 euros in Belgium, the Galaxy Note 4 is clearly not the type of smartphone you give up after one year of use. And for good reason since this terminal is simply the very best at the moment. If we let everyone choose to enjoy – or not – the design of the new flagship of Samsung, however difficult to criticize the performance of this exceptional machine that crushes all competition in the specifics. Because few indeed smartphones capable of standing up to Note 4 on technical bench. With a stunning WQHD screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels (for a pixel density of 515 ppi), the Galaxy Note 4 is a technological showcase for Samsung. It’s also not a coincidence that the manufacturer has chosen this terminal for the design of its virtual reality headset, the VR Gear, which will be marketed in the December our neighbors. Even a few inches of the nose, hard to notice the millions of pixels in the display.

Greater than its predecessor with its diagonal of 5.7 “, Galaxy Note 4 carries the new Snapdragon processor 805 Qualcomm, the Rolls-Royce processors, clocked at 2.7GHz and backed by 3GB of RAM. Extra power is not necessarily very large relative to Note 3 but thins even more navigation and allows to exploit multitasking smartphone.

A handheld

Most critics will no doubt say that such power is useless for a smartphone. Play the latest productions, watch movies in HD and texting does indeed requires minimal power – a quad-core processor supported by 1-2 GB of RAM is more than enough – but the interest of the Galaxy Note 4 is elsewhere.

In 2011, when Samsung launched the first Galaxy Note, the manufacturer was clearly the artists, he hoped to seduce the presence of a stylus, but also professionals, could be interested in a larger display capable of performing several actions at a time. If the Galaxy Note 4 now covers all segments of the population, and not just a niche audience, the argument of productivity remains the order of the day. More than just a smartphone, the Galaxy Note 4 is a true handheld. Except that the stylus that comes with it here replaces the mouse. More than just a precision tool, it provides access to advanced smartphone features. By pressing the pen button, the user accesses eg Air Command, which provides access to several interesting features. Action Memo allows for example to take note of a phone number. The system then recognizes the digits you wrote and you can save the number in your phonebook, to make a phone call or send a text message without having to re-enter the number in your smartphone. “Smart Selection” still allows him to make a screenshot by selecting a part of the image that appears on your screen. Comprehensive, application S Note brings together handwritten notes to “scanning” documents with the smartphone camera and adding memos written with the S-Pen. If you have tried the Surface Pro 3 Microsoft, saying the Note 4 offers pretty much the same experience as the combo OneNote / touch pen Microsoft tablet on a smaller screen.

More interesting, the stylus can be used both as a real mouse to select multiple photos for example in a gallery. With multitasking smartphone, the user can also view multiple applications on the same screen, to copy an image to a conversation, for example, examine any document while chatting with a friend or select pictures to add to an email. Reactive, the interface implemented by Samsung nevertheless requires some time to adapt. It will take effect in several days of use to store all the features of the smartphone.

A much improved design

If a purely technical perspective, the gulf between the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 3 is much less significant than had been imagined, we still note a major improvement in design, much more elegant. Much finer, the shell that covers the back of the smartphone still uses these patterns imitation leather maligned the launch of Note 3, with more expertise. On the edge, there are also metal strapping visually very successful, which really gives the feeling of having a premium smartphone in her mans. If we regret that the display occupies only 75% of the front of the smartphone – unlike the 7 Huawei Mate – however we appreciate the feeling of lightness, strength and elegance that emanates

Some small disappointments

However, the Galaxy Note 4 is not flawless. Be criticized including Samsung to be returned to a micro USB 2.0 port instead of a micro USB 3.0. The manufacturer explains this choice by the fact that few buyers transferred their data on their computer with the USB 3.0 port, the latter being available on tiny part of PCs and tablets currently available in stores. A purely financial decision that fortunately does affect a minority of users.

More disappointing, though Samsung has finally decided to replace the 13-megapixel sensor Note 3 by a Sony 16 megapixel sensor, more efficient, the result is overall quite disappointing. Certainly, the film quality is much better, but it is far from the image quality we find in many competitors. For video on the other hand, Samsung is a giant leap by incorporating an optical stabilizer that can shoot in Full HD in optimal conditions (and 4K without stabilizer). More interestingly, the microphone with the Note 4 is a mind-blowing quality. It not only helps to isolate the interactions of several speakers at a meeting, but also provides exceptional sound quality.

At the front of the smartphone, Samsung also incorporates a new 3.7 megapixel sensor, which will take better self-portraits, and introduces several advanced functions including panoramic Selfie feature that allows running smartphone to the right or left to expand the shooting range.

For the price, it was probably entitled to expect more at this level, but do note 4 remains a very good smartphone with a sensor that would rank rather the top of the basket.

However, unlike the S5, the Note 4 is not water resistant.

Finally, if the Note 4 carries one of the last versions of Android (4.4), it will once again deal with the manufacturer interface, overall very appreciated by the general public for its ease of access, less by geeks.

A two-day autonomy

Where Samsung scores, ie, is at the level of autonomy of its smartphone, which is able to hold up to two days with heavy use. Certainly, the Sony Xperia Z3 is significantly better after comparative tests, but the Note 4 has a secret weapon with a quick charging function to recharge the battery of a smartphone 50% in 40 minutes. Practical! The “Ultra Power Saving” mode in turn increase the autonomy of its smartphone by cutting some features, which can be useful in emergencies, or when the battery is empty.

Conclusion

A true monster power, the Galaxy Note 4 is undoubtedly the Rolls-Royce of smartphone. Elegant, it has one of the best screens we’ve had the opportunity to learn and is extremely effective for ultra-connected users who spend their time chatting with their friends or use their smartphone as a working tool. If the owners of Note 3 Note 2 and even will have little reason to bursting, many will no doubt disappointed the iPhone former owners of BlackBerry smartphone or Android competitors, who will attempt the experiment would -what to the benefits of S-Pen, multitasking smartphone or the overall quality of the screen Note 4
