75 candles for Blue Note – France Info

It was in 1939 that two German immigrants Alfred Lion and his childhood friend, the photographer Francis Wolff, Blue Note created in New York. This legendary label had its heyday in the 50s and 60s with artists like drummer Art Blakey or pianist Herbie Hancock with the song Watermelon Man registered in 1962 remains one of the best sales in the history of Blue Note. The label became a legend for his catalog that brings together the greatest artists in jazz history but also for the sound of his music given for several decades to a single man, Rudy Van Gelder assured that all Blue Note recordings from the ’50s.

The album art also created the legend Blue Note, thanks to the design of Reid Miles and graphic black and white photographs of Francis Wolff, that can be found in the beautiful book The Blue Note Photographs of Francis Wolff which has just appeared. Legend Blue Note continues to build: in 2002 the label has produced the first album of Norah Jones Come away with me which has sold 20 million copies. Today, Blue Note artists are called Gregory Porter, Robert Glasper or Jason Moran. Pianist pays tribute to Fats Waller in his new album All Rise appeared on the famous label
