The last note of Pierre Boulez – The Point

This is a great French composer and conductor who is leaving: Pierre Boulez, 90, died last night in Baden-Baden, Germany, where he lived, his family said in a statement. “For all those who knew him and who could appreciate his creative energy, artistic standards, availability and generosity, his presence will remain vivid and intense,” the family in the statement released by the Philharmonie de Paris, which he was the initiator.

Pierre Boulez, known and played all over the world, is considered one of the most influential musical personalities, including contemporary, since the 1950s this theorist and pedagogue of great clarity defended relentlessly instead of new music in concert programs and encouraged the most demanding musical creation. Chief looked on both sides of the Atlantic, he led at different titles, and always without wand, the Cleveland Orchestra (1967-1972), the BBC Symphony (1971-1975) and the New York Philharmonic (1971-1977).

“The composer is a predator”

More rare in opera than in the symphonic repertoire, Pierre Boulez, however, participated in many memorable productions as the “Centennial Ring” Wagner Bayreuth Festival (1976-1980) and the world premiere of the complete version of “Lulu” at the Palais Garnier Berg (1979). Exasperated by the conservative attitude of the French musical world, he was exiled to Baden-Baden (Germany) at the dawn of the 1960s it was returned to France in 1974, when President Pompidou had asked him founded IRCAM (Institute of Research and Acoustic / Music Coordination) and the Ensemble Intercontemporain. This tireless builder of institutions was also responsible for the City of Music (inaugurated in 1995) and the Philharmonie de Paris, which opened in January 2015 without him, when he was already ill.

In 2014, Pierre Boulez was delivered to Point his feeling about the composer craft. The great man said then anxious to renew again and again. A “biological necessity”, he said. He added: “We must capture the novelty and appropriating the composer is a predator: everything and anything can elicit such behavior – including things which we then asks how it is that. they have had such influence. Between these things and so suddenly appears a news after the fact we can not understand, but he must seize the moment. And, although it is aware of what we did, you can not go back. I liken this to what happens in fairy tales. In order to rescue a maiden, the knight goes through an enchanted forest and there is no going back because the forest has recovered behind “
