Test Meizu Pro 5: a Galaxy Note 5 in a coating Meizu … – LesMobiles.com

It is with much less time than its predecessor, the MX5, the Pro 5 Meizu arrived in France. And of course it would have been a shame to wait. For as the MX5 is a nice product, both the Pro 5 is a real little gem, much to say right now. We will of course support this view throughout the test. A test that reveals the paradox of Samsung vis-à-vis its component branch, as this smartphone is much like a Galaxy Note 5 without the stylus without the rear frame mineral glass without Quad HD display, but with all the rest (or almost). And this at a much more affordable price, you can imagine, even if the Pro 5 is clearly the most expensive smartphone Meizu.

All the expertise of Samsung

Inside this beautiful frame that we will detail in a moment is a robust platform and well known, as is that of the Galaxy family S6 / 5 rating from Samsung. You will notice that the Pro 5 is available either version Note 5 (4 GB RAM, 64 GB of storage) or version S6 (3 GB of RAM and 32GB of storage). The fare difference is fifty euros. This will guide your choice will not be stored online because the Pro 5 has a microSDXC card reader, but the amount of RAM. With 3 GB is comfortable. With 4 GB, what you see coming. This data sheet reveals two important details vis-à-vis the Meizu strategy. The Pro 5 is the successor to the Pro MX4, which was, by its position, slightly more upscale than the MX4. Then, the integration of the Quad HD Pro MX4 was good a tactical mistake that revealed some incorrectly calibrated opportunism. If the MX5 already showed us a bit, the Pro 5 clearly confirms the disadvantages of Quad HD fail to offset the benefits. That is a pity, but more realistic.

An inspired design … but not by Korea

Taking the turn of the owner. Aesthetically, the Pro 5 closely resembles the MX5. We find the same brushed aluminum shell that covers the back and the edges of the phone. This shell is split into three parts with polycarbonate joints, as on many phones with the same technical features to ensure network reception (Antennagate consequence of the iPhone 4 from Apple). The screen is still 2.5D, ie slightly raised. To make the connection between the panel and the frame, Meizu beveled end of the hull, as the MX5. The corners are very round for a visual impression that is more reminiscent of the range iPhone 6 / 6S that the Galaxy range S6

The location of the connectors and hardware buttons has not changed. We find right on the edge of the volume and suspend and left on the edge of the drawer for two SIM cards (the second location being compatible microSD). On the high end, the secondary microphone (for noise reduction). On the low end, the main microphone, the opening for the speaker and the USB port. The Pro 5 is the first smartphone Meizu to present a C-type USB port. On the front, we find the button mTouch here in version 2.1 with the fingerprint reader. By returning the mobile, you find the huge photo sensor protruding out of the flash-true tone and the infrared sensor on the laser autofocus.

As the MX5, but a little more

Compared to the previous two models, the Pro 5 is larger and heavier (20 grams more than the MX5 and 10 grams more than the MX4 Pro). With the MX5, Meizu has abandoned the 16 / 10th ratio for a 16 / 9th classic. Impact: The Pro 5 is much higher (almost 7 mm), but not much larger (1 mm). As MX5, the Pro 5 displays an hourglass figure compared to the previous generation with less and 1.5 mm thick.

Meizu Pro 5 grip

This improvement is certainly due to the use of AMOLED technology that n ‘uses no overall backlight, but micro-LED for each pixel. You will also notice that the ratio between the size of the slab and the front surface of the phone is slightly lower than the MX5: 73.3% against 74.5%. This implies that Meizu has been more effective in optimizing borders and components with its predecessor. To the naked eye, this has very little impact.

The same grip than the MX4 Pro

Taking Started with Pro 5 is in the middle of his two predecessors, despite the increase in screen size, the width of the phone is almost identical to the Pro MX4. So the grip does not change. With respect to the MX5, the difference is not obvious either: the feelings are the same, especially as their designs meet the same codes. The integration of the fingerprint reader in hardware button below the screen is a classic idea (already used in Apple and Samsung), but effective. By pressing it, the reader recognizes the imprint almost immediately and unlocks the phone with one touch. It’s very useful. It is more than the solution of Huawei and LG, under the main photo sensor, but less than that of Sony, on the edge.

Display side, we have the pleasure of meeting for the second time in a row an AMOLED Full HD panel. The resolution goes on here in the 400 pixels per inch bar, but it is not really annoying. And the difference is imperceptible with the MX5. The slab is bright, with vibrant colors (sometimes a little too much), deep contrast and very wide viewing angles. We clearly see the difference with conventional IPS panel. No fourth generation for the Gorilla Glass, but we largely confine this third generation that has proved its worth. We have not taken the risk to suffer a fall at Pro 5 to test the strength of Gorilla Glass. We only enjoyed his very good level of skiing. And we further find that the borders have been better optimized top and bottom of the screen than on the sides …

FlyMe OS: the best in the location

Once the screen on, we find FlymeOS but not in version 5, which should lead to substantial changes and who recently arrived on the MX5. This is a slightly revamped version 4.5, as we will notice it. It is based not on Android 5.0 Lollipop, Lollipop but Android 5.1. This means that the system is better optimized but does not expect a revolution in the interface. In fact, we soon found our brands with Pro 5: no application menu, system tray and quick setup customized, gray and white setting menu. Small errors in translation of the latter have also finally been corrected. There’s better in the international localization. And that’s not all.

For the most change obvious in this interface is the disappearance of two elements we have often criticized in our previous tests on the Meizu smartphones: the first is the Chinese application store Meizu (which replaces the Play Store in China) and the second is the manager theme. Before, when we open one of these two content stores, a message appears explaining that the contents are not localized (either editorially or monetarily). What made them useless. We expected from a Meizu change that view, and the manufacturer has chosen the easy solution: delete what was not

We would have preferred Meizu accept at least part of the theme manager to change the interface to the death (as in HTC or Cyanogen). For now, the FlyMe has now useless (except for credit a wallet just as useless in yuan). For the rest, we are pleased that other applications Meizu survived these menus change, including the music player, always very full, video player, always one of the best (as we shall see) and security center, whose name is clearly reductive, since it manages the mobile protection against viruses, but also the optimization of the system.

More effective than a Galaxy S6

With the configuration of Pro 5, FlyMe OS has never been so fluid. Instant screenshot. Launch of immediate application. And this as well by adjusting the performance of the smartphone (in settings) on normal or powerful. In use, you will not see elsewhere not much difference as daily uses only ask him a plot of these capabilities. And it obviously feels in benchmarks. The Pro 5 shows 83,479 points AnTuTu v6 (the latest version), 1718 points on Basemark OS II and 18981 points Vellamo. On Geekbench, the Pro 5 manages to achieve 1547 points in single-core and 5263 points for multi-core. Finally, 3DMark, the smartphone gets 26635 items with Ice Storm Unlimited 1782 items with Slingshot 3.0 and 1276 points with Slingshot 3.1

Let’s compare these results with the recent smartphones. Starting with the MX5: AnTuTu addition to which it is difficult to compare now, the Pro 5 is obviously far above, on all tests performed. The price difference seems to be relevant. Facing the Xperia Premium Z5, the difference is less obvious. Both smartphones tailgating on all benchmarks, with a slight dominance for the Sony model. As for the latter, the Meizu Pro 5 is behind the Galaxy Note and before 5 Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge

The almost perfect media player

The Meizu Pro 5 is a smartphone among the best performers of 2015. And it will remain so certainly at the beginning of 2016 the time that the models under Exynos 8890 and under 820 Snapdragon will come out in the first quarter of 2016. And it naturally feels multimedia. Video game for example, our standard title Dead Trigger 2 has rarely featured as well. The proof Pro 5 is one of the only smartphones with which Dead Trigger 2 is positioning itself on the best available graphics quality. Using a Full HD screen is therefore fully justified, despite a screen resolution slightly below normal on the high end, because it gives a boost to the system. The beautiful AMOLED Gorilla Glass and slab ensure the visibility and flow of the whole. Do not hesitate with this smartphone, according ask for more.

Also in video: a 5.7-inch panel, the smartphone seems to have been done to display movies and series. The beautiful colors and contrast of AMOLED, associated with one of the best video players on the market: the Meizu Pro 5 stands as one of the best video players that are, particularly with headphones. For the mono speaker provides good sound, but does not honor the couple chipset ESS audio amplifier and Texas Instruments. Moreover, most of you music lovers will be delighted to know that the mobile natively supports stereo sound HD 24bit / 192 Hz as well as all common formats. Hat.

A real progression photo

In the photo, we find the MX5 photo application associated with an update of the photo sensor Exmor (but the same lines as before). The IMX 220 20.7 megapixel thus gives way to the IMX 21 of 230 megapixels. And the result is clearly better than the MX5, which had already made a leap forward vis-à-vis the MX4 and MX4 Pro. This is not so much in the definition of the sensor makes the difference, or even the quality of autofocus, since we find the same infrared sensor for focusing, which makes the difference. Let alone improved camera application that has not moved one iota (with manual mode always welcome).

In contrast, white balance has clearly been revised and corrected. The pictures are so much more bright and sharp, even when the Parisian sky is clouded. And they are much more detailed and balanced, always some flaws in the corners. Impossible to know if this good result is the effect of the Sony sensor or the integrated image processor Samsung with Exynos 7420 (which also produces beautiful pictures with the Galaxy S6). But the fact is there: the Pro 5 is probably the best camera range Meizu. Is the Z5 as the Xperia, Galaxy S6 or iPhone 6S? Maybe not in all conditions. But it comes close.

Probably the best value 2015

In conclusion, with the Pro 5, Meizu clearly goes upmarket. This is reflected in the price, since it is the most expensive of Meizu. But it also feels the relevance of technological choices. The Pro 5 is definitely not a mobile environment premium range, like its predecessors. This is a top model, at least comparable to the proposals from HTC, LG and Huawei. More convincing than a Nexus 6P, a more balanced LG G5, as interesting as the Galaxy S6 multimedia party. If early in the year the choice of Quad HD Pro for MX4 was irrelevant, perhaps she would have been more given the ease of the Exynos 7420 and the size of the slab. However, noe not spoil our fun: Full HD than enough and provides extra responsiveness gain that will ensure him a better scalability in time

In addition to all this good news, a detail saddens us. well though: the hundred euros price difference between the Chinese and the French price. Taxes, currency impact, the boat: all this has a cost, of course. But in a product such as Pro 5, this difference corresponds to an increase of 25% of the original price. And that slightly cooled our enthusiasm.
