Test Xiaomi Redmi Note 3: less inspired, more … – Frandroid

After a very convincing Redmi Note 2 whose benefits were undeniable (read our review), Xiaomi announced last November the Redmi Note 3, the first brand smartphone to be equipped with a sensor ‘fingerprints. Apart from this detail, the novelties of this third generation remain minor. Must we be enthusiastic about the Redmi Note 3 or not?

Bi repetita place

Compared to Redmi Note 2, the Redmi Note 3 does not look very impressive. Same processor, same screen, camera very similar … On paper, this generation seems not revolutionize the genre, which explains that its price has not changed either. We still note some small thoughtful changes, starting with the presence of a fingerprint sensor that had no previous model.

An aesthetic efforts

Although the finishes Xiaomi products are treated, it is rare that one blows a “wahouuu” marveled at one of them. For Redmi Note 3 Nevertheless, the Chinese manufacturer has worked his copy with care to offer made more attractive than usual. Thin, smooth and very rounded edges, it attempts to imitate some of its competitors while still confined to the plastic in order to give a warmer texture and not to overload its weight. This inspiration is perceived especially back, with two different colored bars at the top and bottom of the device. Its shape and texture nonetheless make all rather slippery when the phone is held firmly.

Just like on the Nexus 6P, and others, found in the back, under his camera lens a circular fingerprint sensor size similar to camera module does not denote, perfectly positioned to be positioned under the index and encircled by a bright metal ring. The bright side is also reflected on the logo “MI” on the bottom of the device, just above the speaker. He himself also overlooks a small stand for avoiding the sound is muffled when the Redmi Note 3 is placed on a flat surface.

Like many Chinese manufacturers, Xiaomi has decided to position its three main buttons (Power and Volume +/-) on the right side of the unit. Therefore, the two lowest are easily accessible and naturally fall under the finger, but requires up the volume to reposition his hand to those not large paw.

The front also still very traditional with visible screen borders, but not too large for this price range. The three buttons below the display have not changed, except they are backlit in white and not red as was the case on the Redmi Note 2, a feature flashy which pleased some and allow the phone to stand out a little

.

A good screen Invoice

“You do not change a winning team ‘saying goes that Xiaomi seems to have applied to the letter. Indeed, we see very little difference between screens Redmi Note 2 and Note 3 Redmi, which leads us to wonder even if they do not come from the same stock.

Apart from the size (5.5 inches) and the definition (Full HD), we find similar features between the two IPS panels, starting with good brightness (440 cd / m²) makes it pleasant to use even outdoors, and a contrast of 1226: 1 quite correct that makes the image pleasant to the eye

By pushing a little further you will find that just as the Redmi Note 2. the colors are a bit dull, especially in red and green, and black lacks a bit of depth. All in all, our sensor indicates a rather high temperature that betrays screen colors bluish. In use, however this did not really notice, and those that bother can always go to the phone settings to adjust the temperature to their liking.

MIUI 7 for better or for worse

As for the software part of Redmi Note 3, again, the differences with the Redmi Note 2 are not flagrant, and rightly so since, as the latter, the newest member of Xiaomi runs Android 5.0.2 MIUI 7. As with him also, it integrates the latest security patches to bridge between all other Stagefright fault.

In version 7, the MIUI interface remains as uneven. If one appreciates its fluidity and some thoughtful options, it remains the quintessential Chinese ROM, with approximate translations (since conducted by volunteers), applications préembarquées Chinese (like the App Store ) and the absence of application drawer. In addition, certain applications experience some incompatibilities, like Facebook Messenger for example, which does not launch when clicking on a notification.

Once this collected experience and confusing resemblance iOS accepted, MIUI remains pleasant to use and customizable on many aspects. These include for example the management of quick settings, the choice of operator name, the LED notifications, the appearance of the battery indicator and much more. Finally, for those who prefer more radical changes, a theme shop allows complete revamp its interface while the senior mode, activated from the settings, makes the whole easier to use with a tile interface to Windows Phone .

Finally, note that if the Google Play Store is installed natively, other Google applications usually present (YouTube, Maps, Hangouts, Photos, etc.) must be installed manually.

From the entrance of suitable range

As said earlier, the Redmi Note 3 is not a complete revolution compared to the previous generation. However, some differences can be reported, as additional gigabyte of RAM (in the version tested here), or the frequency of its GPU clocked at 700 MHz instead of 500. Small changes that make it a little more powerful than its predecessor.

MIUI offers two” CPU governors “The optimized and the other dedicated to high performance flange by no means the processor. In this mode, the Redmi Note 3 outperforms all its competitors and even comes tickle some benchmarks ZUK the Z1 and very good Snapdragon 801. The couple Helio X10 + 3 GB RAM works well, it is clear.

In games, it feels good and many of them run without any hiccups at a more than acceptable framerate (Asphalt 8: Airborne, Real Racing 3 …). Only a handful of titles, so well optimized or really heavy (Rayman Adventures for example) suffer from some slowdowns without unsightly it became unplayable so far. In addition, the temperature remains acceptable when the optimized mode. High performance mode however, the heat is felt quickly.

But most impressive is its fingerprint sensor. As promised by Xiaomi, it is very fast and very responsive. In addition, it works even when the screen is on standby and can wake up the phone directly without having to turn it on first and then to unlock his finger in a second time. Only drawback for some, its position at the back of the phone requires to take the hands phone when it is placed on a table.

Still no 800 MHz

As almost always when it comes to import, Redmi Note 3 lacks the 800 MHz frequency band. For city dwellers who rely on the SFR network or to a lesser extent in that of Orange, it may be the problem. Subscribers to Free and Bouygues Telecom should meanwhile be less grieved by this detail and enjoy their 4G Class 4 (150/50 Mbps).

The quality of calls is for his satisfactory share , even if the attenuation of background noise is not the most efficient ever heard.

The WiFi in turn is compatible with the latest standards (802.11 a / b / g / n / acre in 2.4 and 5 GHz), while the GPS, which captures both the A-GPS and GLONASS, sets very quickly and correctly located us in our tests.

Disappointing camera

After the stunning camera from Redmi Note 2, we expected even better the Redmi Note 3. Unfortunately, the quality has not gone in the right direction on this generation, with a result that seems worse.

inside, even if the report is not terrible, for example, we note the presence of noise, even when lighting is strong, or colorimetry tends to get yellow. Outside, the situation is no better light and differences are hardly managed. Unlike Redmi Note 2, this problem is catching up as easily using the HDR mode. Finally, the focus is perfectible, gray areas are not uncommon.

At night, the noise is still present, although it is perfectly justified here. The light elements are nevertheless quickly found haloed of a fuzzy halo, making them less discernible. A defect that can ill afford the Redmi Note 3, the fineness of the photos is, base, worse than its predecessor.

Only good point, the flash was improved and no longer destroy photos . On the contrary, it would be even slightly too soft to perfectly illuminate the high-contrast subjects.

The application offers various options, simple filters to Instagram partial manual mode (for adjusting ISO and the balance white), through a beauty mode that smoothes the skin tone and a scene mode well supplied.

A battery revised upwards

The battery of Redmi Note 2 was clearly not his strong point. To correct his copy, Xiaomi has integrated a battery of 4000 mAh in his latest, almost 1000 mAh more than its predecessor. Therefore, when our usual test (one hour on YouTube in WiFi with the screen brightness set to 200 cd / m²), the Redmi Note 3 lost only 10% of battery, which is among the best results obtained.

battery test

  • Redmi Note 3 90
  • Redmi Note 2 82

This is also confirmed Our actual experience, since we are never fell out of power, and even with extensive use, take one and a half to two days is far from unthinkable.

design

To design, Xiaomi reviewed its models to approximate the current canons, which gives a much more modern style to the device. Stylish and well finished, the Redmi Note 3 is pleasing to the eye, but it remains slippery and key for mounting the volume is difficult to access. In addition, the position of the fingerprint sensor force upon the device in hand to unlock it.

Although it s’ Whether a telephone entry, the Redmi Note 3 is equipped with a beautiful IPS screen. Definition, brightness, contrast, viewing angles … everything is there for a quality experience and more picky only the few will notice color differences.

performance

On paper the Redmi Note 3 is not a lightning war, yet it is in overall very good spell and easily rivals the current range of backgrounds, yet twice as expensive. Overall, most games run very well and only a few titles will reach the limits of fashion “optimized”, forcing him to switch to “high performance” for optimal experience.

software

MIUI has its fans, and this is understandable given its undeniable qualities. However, the Chinese interface also drags few pots that make it confusing or not very ergonomic at times, especially because of certain incompatibilities with other applications.

camera

After the great Redmi the camera Note 2, it is very disappointing that the sensor Redmi Note 3 is very commonplace. HDR Mode useless, uncertain results when the brightness is at the rendezvous, the result almost certainly wrong when this is not the case … This is an extra device that can be expected for a smartphone to 200 euros but the disappointment is all the greater considering ancestry

Self

As for autonomy, Redmi Note 3 is certainly one of the best standards smartphones (those who do not have expressly provided for it). If this is no longer an exception now, it fits easily into the day and grows easily in two days for those who do not consume too much.

In the line of its predecessor Redmi Note 3 offers a very good experience for the price. At 200 euros, it is difficult to find a better quality / price ratio. Good performance, battery life at the top, a beautiful screen and sleek design make it an excellent choice for a stretch that has no budget.

Unfortunately, it also suffers from some flaws, starting with the lack of frequencies on the 800 MHz band, which could cool the subscribers of certain French operators, but also the camera that is far behind that of Redmi Note 2, or its interface which reserves the phone to an informed public and not afraid of the unknown.

Anyway, those seeking a good smartphone with a fingerprint sensor at a low price could find a very good candidate.
