TORONTO – Philippe Gagné of Montreal, which will go to the Olympic Games in Rio, got a first perfect 10 in career en route to the gold medal in the men’s three-meter Saturday at the Olympic trials and national championships summer diving.
Gagné won the gold medal with 481.85 points. Peter Thach Mai of Montreal was second at 412.90 and Tyler Roberge of Edmonton third at 391.45. In the prelims, Gagne got two perfect 10′s for his reverse dive three and a half.
“Get 10 was the highlight of my day because it had never happened to me before, said Gagne, 18 years old. This dive has always been one of my best dives and that’s why I always keep up near the end. “
In the women’s 10 meters, Celina Toth of St. Thomas, Ontario, was the winner with 339.50 points. Caeli McKay of Calgary, the winner of the women’s three-meters on Friday, was second at 310.25 and Olivia Chamandy of Pointe-Claire, Quebec City third at 295.95.
“I feel very good about my performance, ” said Toth, aged 24, also the champion on tower at Summer Nationals last year. Even if I had higher scores in the preliminaries, I’m actually more pleased with my final and how I came back strong after a bad dive. “
The competition this weekend was also the last in the Olympic selection, but all the candidates, including Gagné, were shortlisted following international performance as Olympic selection criteria of Diving Canada .
The Summer Nationals this week will crown the national champions and will be used to choose the Olympic substitutes and select Canadian teams for the FINA Grand Prix in Italy, Malaysia and Australia more later this season.
Olympic diving team will be named on Monday in Montreal.
