Paris: Note (very) salt of the hundred-year flood – Le Point

Is the capital ready to face a great flood? This is what must determine the simulation held this morning (and for two weeks) at the instigation of the Paris police headquarters. Dubbed Sequana 2016, this exercise should help prepare the authorities to the risks would be a flood of Paris like the one in 1910.

The projected doomsday scenario? A sudden flood of the Seine over 500 square kilometers. A cataclysm that would paralyze 5 million Parisians in nearly a half-dozen departments and disorganize sustainable public transport for several weeks.

Exercise “size”

nearly 900 rescuers, 150 police officers, 60 vehicles and 4 helicopters were mobilized for this simulation. 87 public and private partners (administrations, hospitals, companies such as EDF or RATP) are required to cooperate in the framework of this training. “This is the first time you realize an exercise of this magnitude on the scale of the Ile-de-France,” said Jean-Paul Kihl, secretary general of the zone defense and security Paris.

dramatic economic consequences

But how would total impact of such a flood? The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) published last year a study on flood risk management which it is a risk to encryption. Based on the economic consequences of the floods of the Vltava river in Prague in 2002, the Indus in Pakistan in 2010, but flooding related to Hurricane Sandy in 2012, experts of the international organization believe that the direct damage suffered by the region would settle between 3 and 30 billion euros, depending on the scenario.

a particularly heavy note to which should be added “a significant reduction in GDP (particularly for tourism , Ed) that would reach five years of 1.5 to € 58.5 billion is 0.1 to 3% in aggregate. ” What jeopardize nearly 400 000 jobs.

The Paris police prefecture has made a small clip, the disaster-movie Hollywood-like, allowing to imagine what would this vast flood. See here:
