A 12-inch tablet, for what?

With few exceptions, we can divide the world of tablets in two categories: 10-11 inches and 7-8 inches. For a long time it was thought that the 10-inch size was perfect, and it can be the output of the first iPad was. But as often happens, we realize that other sizes may cover various usage scenarios, and to hold the device with one hand without resigning shoulder is appreciable. Hence the success of mini tablets like the Nexus 7 or

Our Video Test Samsung Galaxy Note iPad Mini Pro 12.2.

But that it is with those who are close to 10 inches? On paper, sauté the barrier is open the tablet to other uses: run multiple applications simultaneously, working on a more comfortable canvas for drawing particular, allow the use of multiple interfaces display panels (mounting video, music creation …), short maximize productivity and get the “cool device to watch videos on the sofa.”

The promise is interesting, but it still needs to be properly applied, and especially it has an ecosystem height. Wholesale Must impinge more about traditional uses “PC” that current tablets with little or no cover to compensate the tradeoffs in terms of ergonomics (more weight, reduced portability).

A thin tablet but not very light

Samsung takes no chances with the Galaxy Note Pro 12-inch: it is simply a variation of a … 12 inches the design of the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014. This means that the back faux leather (with fake stitching!) is renewed. Must at least admit that the texture provides a good grip, but for elegance, we revert

And it is advantageous that it is comfortable for the Galaxy Note Pro weighs its weight. To 744 g, forget already held in one hand, and even two, we reached the limits of what can be at arm’s length without inconvenience.

Who says Galaxy Note S-Pen stylus says unfortunately in the same version as on all other devices from Samsung. A small plastic pen therefore, not really pleasant to handle. At least we will not misplace:

No removable back is sometimes even slips the tip to remove the housing, but a Micro SD slot complements the 32GB of internal storage.. As on the latest Samsung devices (Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S5), Micro USB port is version 3.0.

at the back of the tablet, there is a camera, which proves to Moreover pretty good as long as you do not be afraid of public ridicule. Details are present (not too much, anyway) and colorimetry seemed fair enough.

Ditto for 1080p video, fluid and precise, although the autofocus lacks some responsiveness.

For pro use the webcam on the front will obviously be much more useful. It seemed display a correct image

giant screen but subpixels visible

At first contact, rout the screen size.’s ” true “12-inch tablets are rare. But what is it in practice? Say that there are very good and less good: the definition of 2560 x 1600 pixels is somewhat marred by the technology used. Samsung has opted for a PenTile matrix, and a large screen, the subpixels are quite clearly visible. They even create a moiré a bit annoying. It’s a shame, because for the rest, tile stands up very well. Satisfactory legibility, not too saturated colors and perfect for pro intended use, angles impeccable vision

This is probably because Samsung is not particularly the general public that the Exynos processor 5 which team the tablet is not distinguished by its 3D performance: clear, that’s enough to play Candy Crush between two meetings, but it is far from a Sony power Xperia Tablet Z2 for the most demanding titles. But it is not really significant use here, especially the considerable weight makes anyway uncomfortable games. Note: We tested the Wi-Fi version of the Galaxy Note Pro, which incorporates a 5 Exynos processor from Samsung. 4G version with a Snapdragon processor 800 displays undoubtedly superior graphics performance.

to use

Galaxy Note Pro seems cut for productivity . And practice? Samsung optimizations are somewhat mixed. We thus find the “multi-window” Last Galaxy Note or Galaxy S mode, but an improved version, to display up to 4 applications! In theory, the idea is quite good: the display surface is sufficient, and Samsung even manages some third party applications like Twitter or Evernote. We would still like more of them.

Unfortunately, the implementation of the functionality is frankly improved. two applications, one finds the usual operation of Samsung, and it works pretty well. Things get complicated with 3 or 4 applications. These are necessarily arranged in a square (not in column, for example, as proposed by Microsoft), and their size can not be set independently. You can only move the central point, and somewhat blindly, because the whole thing is redrawn once you release the handle. All really lack of responsiveness. Some applications may even be displayed as windows, and here it becomes downright confusing! In sum, implementation remains a risky real management resizing with sizes predefined windows as Windows 8.1 offers.

Another feature for the “pros” is a kind of declination of the fashion magazine to centralize in one page emails, recent documents, or calendar events. An overview of the Metro / Modern UI that does not bring much if you’re already using the center of notifications and widgets on the lock screen.

The tablet is catching up with its management stylus, always impeccable, whether to draw or make contextual Overview screen actions and offer well stocked for business. Knox, how to separate business and personal pro is present. But also a whiteboard application for collaborative meetings, a compatible office suite Office (for lack of a real Microsoft Office for Android tablet), and Cisco WebEx client.

For the rest, it naturally very well what a good tablet. Web surfing is smooth and comfortable, the 12-inch screen lets you enjoy videos in full screen, and email cilent compatible Exchange, has a three-panel display that has not much to envy a portable. Especially as the virtual keyboard is a success. In general, the ROM based on Android KitKat is rather pleasant to use, but perhaps lacking some optimizations

One good thing however. Autonomy is excellent. After 5 hours of use (web surfing, email sync, social networking, gaming, photo / video capture), the battery was still at 75% capacity. Video, screen thoroughly and Wi-Fi enabled, it takes a little less than seven hours to read a 720p rather demanding film, an hour more than iPad Air.

Conclusion

Galaxy Note Pro 12 inch does not leave a bad idea: we talk more and more tablet “pro”, and as usual, Samsung cleared land without asking too many questions, in case it would. And this may be exactly the problem! The manufacturer does not seem to have pushed his thinking far beyond “go out a large 12-inch tablet before Apple or Microsoft will not put” .

Note Pro is exactly that : great tablet with some software optimizations, but not a fully satisfactory to the needs of potential users of such a product response, at least in its current version. Especially since it does not ultimately add much compared to models 10 inches.
