Testing the Galaxy Note 3 - UberGizmo.com

Test Galaxy Note 3

We saw the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for the first time at the IFA in Berlin when it was unveiled with smartwatch Samsung Galaxy Gear. The device is now available at a price of $ 299.99 in four operators, and spent time in real life with a unit of Sprint (a telephone operator in the U.S.).

Samsung has come a long way since the launch of the first Galaxy Note 1 in 2011. Most people laughed at me when I was doing a call from the “big phone ridiculous.” Make fast forward to 2013, it seems that the range of smartphone Galaxy Note is now taken very seriously, and Samsung has sold more than 30 million Galaxy Note 2. Finally, the Korean giant has started the trend of “big screen phones” in the mobile industry and recent stars smartphones such as the LG G2 includes screens over 5 inches, although they are even stored phablet in segment. 5 “is the new” normal “standard.

Notable Galaxy Note 3 updates are full HD 5.7 inch AMOLED screen, the new powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 800 (2.3 GHz), 3GB of RAM, S-Pen improved and the new design with faux leather back cover sewn replacing the plastic widely criticized Galaxy Note 2.

software side, the most interesting innovation is the Air Command menu that works with the S-Pen, which gives access to five functions of productivity practices that we describe in the test.

Background

It is important that I tell you how I use my phone before reading the test. My own use is the prism through which I see how the phone functions are really useful and practical, and how they improve the user experience or not. Fortunately, you can base yourself on my use and see how it applies to you
I use my phone as a computer:. Much I check emails and I canned / flag. Updates of social networks (FB, FourSquare) are important to me, and I also tend to test a lot of apps, so it’s not uncommon for my phone to have 50-80 apps installed (in addition those that are pre-loaded) and I do not always take the time to close all but if I walk some benchmarks. I do not play many games, or watching videos, except perhaps on a long haul flight. And finally, I love the trend of mobile technology, and I’ve used a number of watches and other self-Quantifying sensors.

What’s New

  • Same height, 1mm thinner and 15g lighter than the Galaxy Note 2
  • Snapdragon Processor 800 faster with 3GB of RAM (4G LTE markets only), the Note 2 has a Exynos 4412 and 2GB of RAM (3G markets have an Exynos processor on the Note 3)
  • Screen 5.7 inch full HD 1920 × 1080 Super AMOLED – the previous version had a 5.5-inch 1280 × 800 Super AMOLED
  • 13 megapixel camera on the back cover (against 8 megapixels for the previous model)
  • 3200 mAh battery (3100 mAh against the previous model)
  • New S-Pen: thinner with improved sensitivity. Speed ??virtual ink much faster

Industrial Design

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

I have small hands (gloves for women, size S)

Samsung launched the first “phablet” (phablet = phone / tablet) in 2011, namely the Galaxy Note, and was named “Fablet” when it was tested in 2011 … I personally immediately liked the large format, despite the ridicule of my tech friends, who regularly told me that I look ridiculous when I was doing my calls with this “huge brick” on my face (their own words) . My preference for large phones come from the fact that it is much more comfortable, I can read books on it, I have a great mapping experience when I travel abroad and I surf comfortably on websites desktop <. / p>

Except for the phone manufacturer whose “headquarters in Cupertino” screen more than 5 inches is not uncommon these days, and I have not heard negative comments for a while. The 40 million (Galaxy Note 1 and Note 2) sold is also strong evidence that mobile phones with a large screen is a great product idea, when it is developed properly.

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

Compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Note 3 has a larger screen (5.7 inches against 5.5 inches) for a similar size, with a small size of its borders. The speaker phone is located in the top center of the screen, to the right you will find the proximity sensor, and light. The 2 megapixel camera on the front is at the top in the left corner. At the bottom of the screen, in the middle, you will find the home button and right, back button, and left the menu.

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

“THE FAUX LEATHER ADDS OF ELEGANCE AND HEAT” Samsung created a new design, probably after listening to the feedback on the “cheap plastic” used on the back cover of the Galaxy range. The rear panel is now the faux leather with stitching and all, which helps to add elegance to the package. At the same time, the new design is resistant against scratches and light weight polycarbonate with the previous design work. The 13 megapixel camera with LED flash is at the top of the back cover, above the Samsung logo. The Galaxy Note 3 logo is printed at the bottom.

any Galaxy Note, the back cover is removable to access the large 3200 mAh battery and microSD slot that expands the internal storage up to 64GB. The slot is located on top of the SIM card.

8.3 mm, the Note 3 is thinner than the hair Note 2 (9.4 mm) and includes a framework textured metallic look around the phone. Like all Galaxy series smartphones, the volume button on the left top edge, while the power button is on the right side near the top. You can see the humidity sensor and temperature just above the lower right corner of the device.

The Note 3, near the iPhone 5S

micro USB 3.0 connector that supports MHL 2.0 connectivity is at the bottom, on the right side you will find the speaker. The microphone is located on the left side. Near the right corner, you can enter / exit the S-Pen. USB 3.0 delivers a maximum theoretical transfer rate up to 5Gb / s, which is a huge improvement over USB 2.0, which provides the best 480 Mbps.

You can plug your headphones into the 3.5mm audio port which is located at the top left on the top, where you can also find the second microphone. The IR Transmitter is located on the right side up.

Screen

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

superb 5.7 inch Full HD Super AMOLED (1920 × 1080) provides a clear image quality with a higher resolution than its predecessor: 386 ppi to 267 ppi against the Galaxy Note 2. Personally, I like the style slightly unrealistic and over-saturated AMOLED technology, however, it was noted that the latest flagship smartphone LG, namely the LG G2 delivers a better visual experience with its 5.2-inch IPS screen to those who prefer a more realistic rendering of colors. In addition, Note 3 has good viewing angles.

Software

What differentiates the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 other smartphones, the S-Pen and the new Air Command menu provides access to five new mini productivity apps.

TouchWiz and Samsung apps

Note 3 includes latest version of Android (4.3 Jelly Bean) with the clean of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. Samsung offers a suite of applications that can now be found in the Samsung Folder (Sprint in our unit), which includes Voice, Voice Recorder, Samsung Hub, Samsung Link (which replaced AllShare Play in May 2013), S Translator WatchON (which many of our plant unit), Group Play, S health which was launched with the S4, the new PEN.UP and new applications available from Air Command Action memo and Scrapbook (and more, see the screenshot).

Basically PEN.UP Samsung is similar to Pinterest app that allows people to share their works performed with the S-Pen and other tools. It was launched simultaneously with the Galaxy Note 3.

specific features Samsung launched with the previous devices such as eye tracking, playback mode and one-handed operation is always available and can be enabled in the settings. We talked in our test Galaxy S4 if you’re curious.

My

Magazine powered by Flipboard

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

My Magazine, which was developed in partnership with Flipboard, is similar to the HTC BlinkFeed (powered by Mobiles Republic), except that it does not appear directly on your home screen you access My magazine by scanning the finger upward from the start page. Read our review of the HTC One if you want to know more about Blinkfeed.

Multi Window (Multi-window), the multi-tasking functionality developed by Samsung is first appeared with the first generation Galaxy Tab 10.1, which allows users to use two applications at once by dividing the screen the tablet in two.

Galaxy Note 3 and the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 include enhanced version of the multi-window, and now it is possible to drag and drop content from one application to another in split screen. The demo I saw at IFA included application card and the app text message where an image of the card has been swiped-clicked in a message.

Unfortunately, this feature only works with the SMS app, when I tried to click and drag an image to a note in Evernote, a note to S-Note, to a book or even to Scrapbook Gmail one, he could not walk. For Evernote, S-Note and Scrapbook, the message appears “not supported”, and Gmail, once you are in a new email, the screen is occupied by the email and keyboard, and I have found no way to access the image that I wanted to include. Our assumption is that the developers of third-party applications have not yet implemented the functionality.

Air Command and S-Pen

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

Air Command A new menu has been created to work with the S-Pen, it provides access to five ultra-cool I tried to test this mini applications:

1) Action Memo

Action Memo to convert a handwritten note in an action. With one click, a phone number is converted to manuscript text in the phone app where you can make a call, the same way you can click on an email address to create a new email, and recorded directly address shows the exact location in the Map application. Since actionable note, you can also start a new web search or save a task in a to-do list. The function works really well, even with my horrible writing, and it is quite fast.

2) Scrapbook

Scrapbook, you can collect different types of content from various sources including the web, photo gallery, YouTube, and gather in various Scrapbooks in the Scrapbook application Samsung.

3) Write Screen

Write Screen users can get a screenshot of the current window and write a note above, see the example in the photo gallery. A similar feature was previously launched by LG with the Optimus G in September 2012 (link). I think it will be more convenient than usual combination of screenshot (Power + Volume Down) buttons.

4) S-finder

S-finder is a dedicated search engine to look for any type of content on the device, including handwritten notes. The search can be filtered by date, location, and type of content to search for documents, events, communication threads and even the Help page. When tested against the Google search app that lets you search the phone (bottom of screen), the results were better with the S-finder who found the names in my contact list and Evernote too. Google did not return results in my phone.

5) Pen window

Pen window is one of my favorite new features: simply by drawing a window of any size with the S Pen, users can quickly open another application, such as YouTube, calculator or the browser of internet. The new window is up and when you minimize it, it is displayed as a small circle that can be reopened as a window by clicking on it. The concept of having small circles floating around the screen of a mobile device was first shown by the Facebook chat for Android.

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

Galaxy Note 3 was launched simultaneously with the Galaxy Gear, the Samsung smart watch. To configure it for the first time, you just have to tap the Note 3 on the back of the charging cradle. Make sure that the Gear is not in the cradle when you do this, it will not work. The animated graphic indicating that the user starts using the Smartwatch is clear enough, the cradle appears without the watch in, however, logically, it is hard to imagine why it would not work with the device inside .

Last month, the Galaxy Gear could only be paired with the Galaxy Note 3 Samsung Galaxy other smartphones (S4, S3, Note 2) have also been added after order also use the Galaxy Gear, opening a market well largest to watch Samsung. Finally, one can only hope that Samsung will open this over Android smartphones, perhaps via an app.

Gear has an amazing product design and allows users to perform tasks cool and fun, including responding to phone calls directly from the watch, like James Bond would.

Read our pre-test of the Galaxy Gear at IFA. I want to spend more time with before a full test, which should be soon.

APN Galaxy Note 3 (very good)

In terms of hardware for the NPC, the NPC took Samsung Galaxy S4 and used in the Galaxy Note 3. This explains why there has not been much communication about the NPC. The good news is that the NPC S4 is very good and the overall experience is great. The Note 3 could benefit from some improvements in terms of speed thanks to progress made on the Snapdragon chip 800 600 against the Snapdragon S4 used in (at least in the version we tested in the USA).

about the specifications of the camera quickly, Note 3 uses a 13 megapixel sensor (which is Sony) and uses a lens with a long focal length of 4.2mm (equivalent to 31mm compared to 35mm format) . The camera on the front is 2 megapixels, and once again, it seems that this is the same as the S4. No surprises here.
Galaxy Note 3 is especially good for taking pictures of landscape where high resolution is really helpful to the point that Sony has more megapixels on some of their high-end APNs.

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

In terms of color balance and exposure settings, the Note 3 does the right thing most of the time without user intervention. I would have liked the idea of ??being able to focus and exposure in two different places, but no phone manufacturer seems to like this idea, but apps like Camera + does very well on the iPhone.

Although this is a very good camera, the Galaxy Note 3 does not have a “reputation”, whether in low light, or capture rate. It delivers a predictable and consistent solid user experience. We have uploaded the sample photos on our Flickr account, so feel free to watch the full-size photos .

In terms of video recording, the performance is once again strong, but this time, Samsung has added a video recording option 4K, with support added to the Snapdragon chip 800. The recording bitrate of 48 Mbps is very high for a mobile device, but the current 4K video films will be even bigger! The result is that 4K video storage will increase at least twice as fast when recording in 1080p. Maybe it’s time to buy the 64GB microSD card! And finally, there is an “audio zoom” function that allows the phone to focus his audio recording of a person when you zoom in on someone when recording.

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

As usual, the camera app Samsung Galaxy Note 3 includes features, and normal modes are all there: sports, VR sphere, Panorama, Eraser (to remove photo-bombers), animated photos, best portraits (takes a face among many photos), Beauty face (in integrated gos Photoshopping) and more.

I suspect that most of you use the “Auto” mode by default, and the good news is that the Samsung camera app does a very good job of adjusting the camera properly to take good pictures.

Last word on the camera, I would add that the screen is actually a great element in the overall user experience. When you take pictures, the big screen enhances the experience significantly more than what you think, if you’ve never used a phone with a big screen (try). In addition, users frequently show the photos on the phone itself, so once again, have a large screen with full 1080p resolution has a large impact on the look of the photos. The over-saturation of the AMOLED screen will often get very positive feedback from people who see them.

look “showcase” Mobile photography should not be underestimated, because the reality is that we do not dissect these photos in Photoshop to 100% scale, you look at the web (after reduction of the image size) or directly on the screen.

Entertainment (excellent)

Fortunately, almost all high-end smartphones are great for managing high-quality media files, music, etc … For example, the Galaxy Note 3 can play 4K movies like this fabulous video TimeScape. Entertainment capabilities of a mobile device are defined by things like. Screen size, screen quality, size of the speaker and playback quality headphones

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

looking from this angle, you can easily see why a phone like the Galaxy Note 3 excel in entertainment. The big, beautiful display ensures that movies and photos are stunning. When you are on a long haul flight, you would prefer to watch a movie on the Note 3, or a 4 “screen? My answer to this question is quite clear: large screens reign when it comes to watching movies “THE BIG SCREENS PREVAIL IN THE FIELD OF ENTERTAINMENT” <. span class = "pullquote_social_share">

speaker is powerful and the sound quality is pretty good. On this point, it is very difficult for any smartphone to move more without serious treatment of her, because of the physical limitations of small speakers. The Note 3 is doing well, but I think the best option is to have speakers that are facing the user. The iPhone 5S and Note 3 have a sound that is “directional” in the sense that you can “feel” that comes from one side of the phone.

When using headphones, it’s not bad either. In theory, Note 3 could have a powerful audio with surround sound algorithms embedded in the Snapdragon 800. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find movies that use the appropriate encoding. The audio demo is pretty amazing, and we saw two movie clips “blockbuster” at the tech demos that would salivate everyone. Here, we need to see commercial applications of these technologies. What is known is that it will come.

Testing the Galaxy Note 3

Finally, the games will undoubtedly benefit from the speed of the graphics processor Snapdragon 800. As one of the fastest on Android hardware platforms at the moment, we can say that Android gamers will not be disappointed. Once again, the big screen helps you get a better gaming experience, there’s no doubt.

Performance Galaxy Note 3 (excellent)

Being the top of the newest Samsung smartphone range to be launched, the performance of Galaxy Note 3 will be higher than its cousin the Galaxy S4. After all, it works with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, while the Snapdragon S4 has a 600 (or a Samsung Exynos chip in selected countries). There are visible differences in CPU and graphics performance, and some optimizations. What is more interesting is to see its performance relative to other smartphones Snapdragon 800, including the Vaio Z or the LG Ultra G2.

Benchmark

It is impossible to talk about this subject without addressing the issues raised about the benchmarks in recent months, namely the “optimization” or “cheats (cheating)” depending on who you talk to. The context of this is that Samsung and other manufacturers have used detection methods and benchmarks have changed the thermal management and battery for those specific apps, to allow the maximum speed of the hardware.

This is possible because the benchmarks only run a few minutes at most, so there is no real risk of damage to the equipment involved. Now the real problem is that it might give a false picture of the behavior of the phone, and as the benchmarks are written to accurately measure it, the score is inflated – a few percent to 20% or 50% in some If (on the other hand, “syntheses benchmarks” does not really represent what the phone actually does).

“BENCHMARKS ARE THE INDICATORS, BUT WE DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU RELY ON FOR A PURCHASE”
For this test, the benchmark Geekbench 3 shows an” increase “of 4% per core for the Galaxy Note 3. Accumulate more than 4 cores in multi-core benchmark, this translates into an increase of about 18% on the parameters of conventional thermal management. If you really want to get into details, I recommend you read the following articles of the team behind the Antutu Benchmark, Ars Technica and Anandtech that give many details if you need “proof”.

Samsung replied: “The Galaxy Note 3 maximizes frequency CPU / GPU when it’s walk features that require significant performance … It was not an attempt to exaggerate the results of benchmarking in particular. We remain committed to providing our customers with the best user experience possible. “(Spokesman Samsung)

Those who have followed the issue pointed out that almost all manufacturers do, or have done something like that, and it is not even certain that the other OEMs do not, or have not yet taken. For this test, we gather as much as possible scores “non-optimized”.

Although it is not recommended that you make a buying decision based on performance scores of “synthetic benchmark” (the overall user experience is much more important, and often weakly related to the speed) We believe that benchmarks are useful to get a general idea of ??a device compared to the competition. However, if there is value in the fact that accurately measure and compare scores, so you can imagine the damage when you “cheat” on what they are trying to do.
