The Habs finished the year on a bad note – The Gazette (subscription)

Sunrise – The Canadiens escaped a famous four-point game on Tuesday.

Despite all the good will of the new goalkeeper Ben Scrivens, the Habs concluded his last game of the year on a bad note, bowing 3-1 to Panthers Florida.

The meeting had special significance for the Canadiens (21-15-3), who was trying to protect his first place in the Atlantic section. Unfortunately, Michel Therrien’s men have not answered the call, and the Panthers (21-12-4) were delighted with CH, who moreover played two more games than them.

We played against a big training. This is a team that has a lot of talent, which is very physical and maturing , listed Therrien. The Capitals (Washington) and they are probably the two best clubs in our association.

We did not have the energy needed to compete with them, it’s as simple as that.

Aleksander Barkov, with two goals and an assist and Jaromir Jagr scored for the Panthers. Max Pacioretty was the only one to provide the response.

As was too often the case in recent weeks, the HC lacked opportunism in attack. According Therrien is the execution that was lacking.

It’s like a relay race , has he imaged. Although you have the four best sprinters in your team, they call the witness in the ankles, you never end up first. Our transition game was not good tonight.

So do not blame Scrivens to defeat. Far from being rusty, it seemed very quiet in front of his cage and is illustrated by performing several quality stops. Alberta’s 29, whose previous NHL start dated back to April 11, against the Vancouver Canucks, has rejected a total of 26 shots.

I did not find good, I found it very good. It was excellent , said head coach Michel Therrien about Scrivens.

At the other end the ice, Roberto Luongo, who has won his last six starts, made 27 saves for the Panthers.

Pacioretty, him again

The match started off well for the Canadian.

Less than 24 hours after giving victory to the Habs in the shootout against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Pacioretty opened the scoring on the power play , at 12:39 of the first period.

However, Barkov has brought both teams to square one on the power play at 16:28 of the first period. Jagr, towering column of pointers Floridian club with 11 goals and 15 assists in 34 games, gave the lead to his team while going to a beautiful piece of individual play, after 1:16 in the second period.

This net appeared to shake the CH, which was dominated for much of the second period. Therrien has also seen fit to call a halt to some adjustments in the last third of the commitment. Before the intermission, Daniel Carr could have created equal, but his wrist shot crashed against the crossbar.

Barkov sealed the end of the meeting by thwarting again Scrivens four-against-four at 8:53 of the final third.

Subban throws gloves

Unusually, PK Subban threw the gloves before Derek MacKenzie late in the first period after the player the Panthers had firmly told him a questionable implementation failure. This fight has not a winner more like a wrestling match.

Far from blaming Subban, Therrien said he considered MacKenzie deserved punishment.

Secondly, Devante Smith-Pelly, Alexei Emelin and Jarred Tinordi were again left out.

The Canadiens play its next game on 1 January, on the occasion of the Winter Classic, against the Boston Bruins.
